GAF Ridge Vent Installation: The West Palm Beach Owner’s Guide

GAF ridge vent installation in West Palm Beach typically runs between $650 and $1,100 for most single-family homes, depending on linear footage and roof accessibility. Birchbark Roofing stocks the parts, installs them same week, and hands you a written price before any work starts. We’ve replaced hundreds of these on Florida roofs, and we’re not affiliated with GAF – we’re just a local crew that knows their product inside and out.

Most owners discover the problem the same way: a spike in the attic temperature, a musty smell in the upstairs hallway, or granules and plastic shards in the gutter after a storm. The ridge vent is the thin strip running along the peak of your roof. When it fails, your attic stops breathing, and in West Palm Beach humidity, that turns into trouble fast.

Which GAF Models This Applies To

We work with three GAF ridge vent lines: the Cobra Ridge Vent, Cobra Snow Country, and the newer Cobra Ridge Runner. The Snow Country is the tougher, wind-rated option, and in West Palm Beach’s hurricane zone, it’s the one we recommend most often. The Ridge Runner shares the same shingle-over profile as the Cobra but uses a different internal baffle design, so you can’t mix components between the two.

The gotcha most homeowners hit: GAF’s warranty on the vent itself only applies if it’s installed over their matching GAF shingle system with the correct nails per foot and the vent’s width centered on the ridge. If someone retrofit a Cobra vent over CertainTeed shingles, the vent still works, but the manufacturer won’t stand behind the materials the same way. We stock GAF, Owens Corning, and CertainTeed parts on the truck, so we’ll match whatever is actually on your roof and tell you plainly what it changes. When identifying your vent, look for the embossed GAF logo on the edge of the plastic, or measure the exposed width: Cobra runs roughly 11.5 inches wide, Ridge Runner closer to 12.

Signs Your GAF Ridge Vent Installation Is Failing

  • Attic temperature climbing. A working ridge vent lets hot air escape continuously. When the baffles clog with dust or the vent cracks, that air banks up. You’ll notice the upstairs bedrooms running noticeably hotter than the rest of the house, especially by mid-afternoon.
  • Shingle granules washing into gutters. Some granule loss is normal on any asphalt shingle, but if you see dark plastic pieces or shards of the vent itself mixed in, the vent has degraded past its service life. Sun and salt air in West Palm Beach will do that over a decade or so.
  • Musty or stale smell near the attic access. A failed ridge vent means trapped moisture. In our climate, that moisture feeds mildew within weeks. If the hallway smells like a boat that’s been closed up, check the attic first.
  • Rust or corrosion on the vent fasteners. Nearly every failed ridge vent we see near the coast has rusted nails or staples. Once corrosion starts, the vent lifts and wind-driven rain finds its way under the shingles at the peak.
  • Visible gaps or sagging along the ridge line. If you can see daylight or a dip from the street, the vent has pulled away from the decking. That’s no longer a vent; that’s an open path for water and pests.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For a standard single-story home in West Palm Beach, expect $650 to $1,100 installed. That includes the linear feet of ridge vent, new cap shingles if yours are compromised, roof nails or screws, removal of the failed vent, and the labor to reseal and install. A two-story home with a steep pitch will push toward the higher end because the crew needs fall protection and more time on the ladder. Longer ridges mean more vent footage, but the setup cost is the same, so large ranches often come in under the per-foot average.

Every Birchbark Roofing estimate is a written price, not a range. Erik Lindgren learned years ago that a handshake number causes more problems than it solves, so the price you get before we start is the price on the final invoice. The 365-Day Done Right Promise covers the work: if the vent leaks, lifts, or fails within the first year, we make it right at no charge. We’ll also show you a photo of the clean-up before the crew leaves – staging area, driveway, flower beds, the whole picture.

DIY or Call Us?

Here’s the honest split. If you want to identify the problem, you can safely check a few things from the ground: look for sagging or gaps along the ridge, watch for plastic shards in the gutter, and note the attic temperature. What we don’t recommend is climbing onto a West Palm Beach roof in July to swap a ridge vent yourself. The peak of the roof is the hottest, trickiest place to work, the surface is slick with humidity, and one bad step on a tile or composite roof sends you to the emergency room. You’re also disrupting the shingle overlap that keeps water out, which is exactly where a first-timer goes sideways. If you’re reasonably handy and the roof is walkable, a ridge vent swap looks simple on YouTube. The reality involves cutting away old cap shingles without scoring the underlayment, aligning the vent perfectly on the ridge, and nailing on a line that won’t leak in a Florida afternoon thunderstorm. That’s a job for someone who does it weekly.
